Why Does Yoga Work?

Blog Featured Post Image

Many individuals practice yoga for stress relief or to establish balance in their life. Here at the Vermont Center for Yoga & Therapy, yoga is utilized to treat many ailments including anxiety, depression, PTSD, or chronic stress. So why is yoga helpful for treatment?

Streeter, Gerbarg, Saper, Ciraulo, and Brown (2012), researched the effects of yoga below the surface. They found that yoga works to balance the autonomic nervous system, parasympathetic nervous system, sympathetic nervous system, and the gamma amino-butryic acid (GABA) system. Symptoms of anxiety, depression, PTSD and chronic stress increase when the system experiences more stress. Yoga corrects these imbalances and can lead individuals to experience relief.
